Data-driven district heating: Mölndal Energy shows the way to better cooling and happier customers

Data-driven district heating in practice

When Mölndal Energi started working more proactively with its district heating data, the playing field changed. With the help of Utilifeed's digital platform, they were able to both streamline work internally and help their customers save money. At the center was a new view of data, flexibility – and an unusually open system solution.

A local energy giant with a focus on customer benefits

Mölndal Energi supplies electricity, district heating, district cooling and energy trading to customers throughout Sweden. The company has long had sustainability as a guiding light, while so many other players struggled with a growing need: to convert large amounts of energy data into practical use - both internally and for customers.

“We always had a good idea - but maybe not quite as good as we thought.” Oskar Finnerman, Project Manager, Mölndal Energi

The challenge: Manual troubleshooting in a sea of data

The daily work with analysis took place largely in Excel. Despite good structure and experience, it was both time-consuming and inefficient - especially when it came to identifying deficiencies in the cooling, i.e. when the district heating water is not sufficiently cooled before returning to the network.

Inefficient cooling leads to energy losses, higher production costs - and ultimately a worse offer to the customer. To solve this, something more than traditional tools was needed.

The solution: An open platform with smart error detection

By implementing Utilifeed's platform, with a particular focus on the fault detection module, Mölndal Energi was able to automate much of the manual analysis work.

“It was crucial that the system was open with data access – it greatly simplified the integration.” Claes Kvist, Energy Engineer, Mölndal Energi

The module analyzes the customers' facilities in real time and identifies deviations – for example, high return temperatures or abnormal patterns in energy use. This makes it possible for Mölndal Energi to proactively contact customers and suggest measures – often before the customer himself notices the problem.

A concrete result: 138,000 SEK in annual savings

A clear example is a customer who, after a system error was identified, was able to implement measures that reduced energy costs by over 138,000 SEK per year - and at the same time, Mölndal Energi itself saved 120,000 SEK.

“We quickly noticed the value of working proactively. It has saved both time and money." Claes Kvist, Energy Engineer, Mölndal Energi

By combining technical insight with effective communication, Mölndal Energi has not only improved their operations – they have also strengthened their customer relationships.

Looking ahead: From reactive to predictive operation

This is just the beginning. Now the team wants to further develop the work and integrate more modules from Utilifeed. One goal is for the measurement data team to be able to contribute even more to the troubleshooting work.

“My vision is that we should be able to identify problems even earlier - perhaps even before they affect the customer.” Oskar Finnerman, Project Manager, Mölndal Energi

At a time when district heating networks are becoming increasingly complex, Mölndal Energi shows that digitization is not about technology in itself - but about creating benefits for both the company and the customers.
